CO FOUNDRESS
ST. MARY DOMENICA MAZZARELLO
The Co-foundress of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians
The story begins with the Dream of Don Bosco
The Story begins with a twice repeated dream of Don Bosco. He dreamt that he was crossing the Piazza Vittorio in Turin. The piazza was filled with noisy, screaming girls who appeared to have no one to look after them. A few were in a group apart and were not playing. These came over to the saint. A gracious Lady appeared there and encouraged Don Bosco to take care of these girls. She repeated: “Take Care for them, they too are my children.”
Was she also a dreamer?
Was she also a dreamer? Some time before, but in her waking hours, she had seen on an elevation at Borgo Alto, where only an old hut existed, a large building with spacious courtyards. Many girls were playing in these courtyards and she seemed to be in charge of them and she heard a voice. “I entrust them to you.”
While the Blessed Virgin obtained for Don Bosco every grace and favour he needed for the Construction of the Sanctuary at Valdocco, she was also preparing, the one who was to be placed by the saint at the head of the new Religious Institute he had in mind to found for quite some time.
Sister Mary Mazzarello was thirty five years of age. Her ideal, like that of Don Bosco, was led by the Spirit of God, She lived her obligations as superior and Co-Foundress with intensity, infusing into her daughters that tender, strong, authentic and practical love of God and neighbour proper to those who live “truly consecrated lives.”
She left to her Daughters an educational tradition permeated with evangelical guidelines: The search for God known through enlightened catechesis and burning charity, responsibility in work, sincerity and humility, austerity of life, and joyful self-giving. She died at Nizza Monferrato on 14 May 1881. She was beatified by Pius XI in 1938, and Pius XII Canonized her on 24 June 1951.
- “Speak little, very little to creatures, instead speak much to God. He will make you truly wise.”
- “Take heart, my dear sisters, let us always keep in mind that everything passes. Let nothing disturb us it will help us towards acquiring true happiness.”
- “Be cheerful always, never be sad. Sadness is the mother of tepidity.”
